History

The Columbia Valley Rockies are a junior ice hockey team based in Invermere, British Columbia, Canada. They are members of the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay Conference of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). The Rockies play their home games at Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena

The Rockies are the 1987-88, 1988–89, 1989-90 KIJHL Champions. The Rockies are also the 1989 Cyclone Taylor Cup Champions.

The team was founded by Eddie Mountain, for whom their home arena, and the KIJHL Division in which the Rockies play is named.

The Rockies won three straight KIJHL championships in the late 1980s and in 1989 took home the Cyclone Taylor Cup under the direction of Tom Renney, who went on to coach the Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers and Team Canada.

Why The Rockies wear New York Islanders Colours:

Back in the days of Eddie Mountain, Marshall Davidson was coaching the team, and his brother, hockey legend, John 'JD' Davidson went off to join the New York Rangers.
Eddie needed new jerseys for the coming season and instructed Marshall to ask his now famous brother to sponsor them.
John kindly agreed to buy jerseys for The Rockies as long as they were New York colours to mark his moving to The Rangers. Eddie kept his part of the bargain by ordering New York colours, but they turned out to be of the Islanders variety.....

A tradition that todays Rockies hold true to, especially since current coach, Wade Dubielewicz found his NHL fame with the Isles, and the now legendary 'poke check'

Being part of a Junior B development league presents funding challenges, which have been inventively overcome by the Rockies organisation through various annual events and activities.

Bull Riding in the Rockies :

A community based Rodeo and Family Dance, now in it's 14th year, is held every July. Since 2011 the event has been named as a memorial for the late Bill McIntosh; a Team Founder, ardent Rockies supporter, worker and director since the days of Eddie Mountain. Affectionately regarded and deeply respected  by all the Rockies players (and all others) that were privileged enough to know him, 'Billy Mac'  is sadly missed but well remembered. The current Rockies wear his initials, 'WPM' on their jerseys; and Bill continues to be represented in the organization, by his wife, and
Club co - founder, Julie; who is a Life tTme director of the Club.

Another eagerly awaited event in the Rockies calendar is the annual classic car draw which runs over the summer months; the lucky winner being chosen soon after hockey season begins.

The team themselves have for years taken part in 'Rockies Wood Pile' - a valuable service to our community in winter that provides winter fuel for many that are unable to get it for themselves, while raising funds for the team. Wood Pile is organised by long time volunteers, Jerry Hope; and Ray Brydon, our Former Treasurer and a main-stay of our Bull Riding and Car Draw.

In addition to fundraising, the team, organization and volunteers are very much involved in the local community through our firm commitments  towards:  furthering player education;  community service; and by Billet placement.

These events and programs, are of course secondary to the real business of playing hockey.

Both the on ice and off ice development of our players is assured by a srrong coaching system put in place featuring all the following aspects:

Hockey and Skating Skills / Systems
Physical Fitness
Education in both life and academic skills
Community Service
Mentorship
Personal Development

This program is delivered by our coaching staff  (please see the 'Staff' Section for more details) including:

Wade 'Dubie' Dubielwicz (Coach )

Wade tended goal for the Rockies prior to building an impressive NHL and European career with the New York Islanders; Columbus Blue Jackets; Minnesota Wild; and Cologne Sharks.

Our coaches are supported by a dedicated Hockey Operations group comprising of several board members; Rockies alumni and volunteers, all of whom are from strong Hockey and Coachiing backgrounds. This group plays a significant role in expanding our scouting and coaching abilities; and includes highly respected local coaches and Rockies Director / GM,  Ross Bidinger (on the right of the  photo below).

The team also has the services of a dedicated Trainer for both home and away fixtures; and top class hockey based dry land training facilities with local instructors.

The aim of the Columbia Valley Rockies, both as a Hockey Team, and wider organisation is simply to help each of our players  develop their professional abilities, and become the best person they can possibly be; while playing 'The Coolest Game on Earth'.
